The
Space Marines
First on the painting
table were the Space Marines, which
Chris carefully cleaned up with a Hobby
Knife and files before undercoating them
with Chaos Black spray.
Chris chose the
Dreadnought and the Tactical Marine
because they contain all the techniques
you'll need to paint the Terminators and
the Space Marine Captain too.
Chris started by basecoating
the model using Mordian Blue. This was
applied to all of the armour plates, as well
as the helmet and backpack. The rims of the
Space Marine's shoulder pads, as well as any
other areas that were going to be gold, were
painted with a 50/50 mix of Scorched Brown
and Shining Gold. Brown leather areas were
painted with Scorched Brown, while parchment
was painted with Khemri Brown. The Space
Marine's eye lenses, as well as the wax on
his purity seal and the pipes on the
Dreadnought were painted with Scab Red, and
the metallic areas (such as the boltgun,
grenade, the Dreadnought's multimelta and
the armoured flexible ribbing) were painted
with Boltgun Metal. Lastly, areas that would
later be painted white or stone were
basecoated with Codex Grey. Any areas that
would be black on the finished model were
left unpainted, or touched up with Chaos
Black if other colours had strayed onto them.

The second stage was nice
and easy, Chris explained. The models were
given two washes. The first was of Gryphonne
Sepia and covered the gold and parchment.
The second was of Badab Black and covered
the rest of the models.
2
In the next stage, Chris
applied highlights to the models. Once the
washes from the previous stage were
completely dry, he highlighted the armour
with Ultramarines Blue. The gold was
highlighted with Shining Gold and the
metallic areas were highlighted with Boltgun
Metal. The brown was highlighted with
Scorched Brown, the parchment with Bleached
Bone and the red with Blood Red. The areas
that were going to be painted white or stone
(like the Tactical marking on the shoulder
pad) were painted with Fortress Grey. Lastly,
the black areas were highlighted with
Adeptus Battlegrey and given another wash of
Badab Black.

Next, Chris added to the
first batch of highlights, detailing the
models further. The armour was now carefully
highlighted with Fortress Grey and the gold
with a 50/50 mix of Shining Gold and
Chainmail. The brown was highlighted with a
50/50 mix of Scorched Brown and Bleached
Bone. The metal was highlighted with
Chainmail and the parchment was highlighted
with Skull White. The red areas were
highlighted with a very fine highlight of
Blazing Orange and the white areas were
highlighted with Astronomican Grey.

The fifth and final stage
was where Chris applied all of the fine
details to the Space Marine and Dreadnought.
He weathered the Dreadnought by painting on
watered-down Adeptus Battlegrey to areas
that were likely to have received battle
damage. He then highlighted this with
Boltgun Metal. The red areas like eye lenses
and pipes were given a final highlight of
Vomit Brown. He also created a singed-effect
on the barrels of the multi-melta (which is
perfect for use on flamers too) by carefully
drybrushing a fine coat of Tin Bitz,
followed by Chaos Black around the barrels
and vent-holes.
For the bases, Chris glued
modelling sand to the base with PVA glue and
left them to dry. He then painted the sand
with Bestial Brown before drybrushing it
with Bubonic Brown followed by Bleached Bone.
The rims were painted with Graveyard Earth.
