This allows metallic surfaces to be built up step by step: from the opaque base coat through targeted highlights (Light) and realistic shadows (Shade) to the airbrush version for larger areas. Vallejo True Metallic Metal - BASE The BASE variant Aged Metal is the heart of every True Metallic Metal color range. It delivers the metallic base tone with full coverage and a smooth homogeneous finish. This version contains fine metallic pigments and an optimized binder allowing it to produce smooth layers without visible brushstrokes. Do I need prior knowledge of BASE paint? No prior knowledge is required but it helps to understand the role of base light and shade in the overall concept. The base establishes the medium metallic tone upon which you can build with light highlights and integrate shadows with shade. When applying it's recommended to build up thin layers in several passes to ensure an even shine. Tips for use The Base variant accepts mixtures with Light to create lighter transitions without changing the hue too much. It works on black white or grey primer retaining the metallic effect (but we have also seen red applied over blue and still provide good coverage). Even though the color is relatively self-leveling you should work slowly and evenly to prevent unwanted running. Stirring/shaking occasionally is important to keep the pigments evenly distributed.
